ALWYN COURT LOFT
NEW YORK, NY
SPG Architects converted a series of maid’s rooms on the roof of the historic Alwyn Court Building into this airy L-shaped loft space with a terrace. Our client, an auction house proprietor, has a constantly evolving collection of art and antiques. He wished to maximize & simplify the open space to provide total flexibility depending on the pieces in his personal inventory at any one time, with completely adaptable art lighting.
With the exception of service rooms, we created one large living area. The floor was refinished with soft gray French limestone. Taking our cues from the existing metal casement windows & terrace doors, the kitchen was fitted out with metal laboratory cabinets and all the interior doors were made to match the terrace doors, using translucent glazing to provide privacy. A single suspended halogen lighting track travels the length of the L-shaped open space to afford lighting aimed at walls to either side.
