FRIENDS SEMINARY PEACE GARDEN

NEW YORK CITY

SPG Architects was approached by Friends Seminary to develop a memorial to the men, women, and children who died in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. SPG designed a private elevated terrace for the students and faculty of the school. The terrace occupies approximately 525 SF and is accessible by a new stair from the courtyard below. The private terrace is surrounded by cherry laurel ferns and creates a contemplative space separated from the usual sights and sounds of New York City. The poem “Of Mere Being” by Wallace Stevens, written in 1954 is depicted in script below the planters enclosing the terrace.
