Sitting on a riverside in Kibogora District, Banda, Rwanda, this 2950 SF maternity hospital is the latest in a sequence of local projects supported by KAGENO RWANDA, the goal of which is to empower communities though improved public health, a diversified economy, better education, and stronger infrastructures in this remote community. This maternity hospital will provide much needed health care services to local families.
The design is meant to further the original site plan that SPG developed for the site, and enhance and extend the presence of the previously constructed Kageno clinics, class rooms, and community center. Consisting of two parallel volumes attached to each other, the building contains four main rooms connected by a corridor in the middle, including Waiting Room, Consultation Room, Delivering Room and Post-Partum Room. The two roofs on the two volumes reference the other building, and add to the rhythm of the building sequence. The main materials used here are bricks, stucco, corrugated steel and wood, all of which local builders have worked with in the past, with the local workforce having learned these skills largely through the construction of the earlier SPG-designed compound.
